Care - A column dedicated to acts of kindness
Jesal Sheth
I visited a school for the mentally challenged at NIMHANS today.
I entered the building with the feeling of apprehension and a few questions pondering over me- what would the kids look like? What do i go and do in there? What would i talk to them? Would it be ok if I touch them?
And many more of this sort...the moment I entered a classroom, i saw all the kids sitting without making any noise. Some played with blocks and clay while the others wrote in their books. From one corner of the room, i saw a girl smiling at me.
I left all my inhibitions aside, walked up to her, smiled at her and shook hands. I was told that she is a 13 year old who is mentally like a 3 year old and thus, couldn't do anything that a normal 13 year old could. Also, i met a 10 year old boy whose mental age was that of a 2 year old. The moment i saw him, my heart melt...tears rolled down my cheeks as i hugged him. He had a cleft lip and a cleft palate. He was sitting in one corner of the room doing nothing! I was told that he sits there all day, every day doing nothing. I was overwhelmed. It was truly heart wrenching! At that moment, I thanked God for everything that i have...for giving me the best of everything-the best parents and family to the best physical and mental health one could get.
Those kids were born to parents just like ours, but weren't fortunate enough to lead a normal life like we are... Those kids are living on the edge and all they need is a little care, support, love and respect to keep them going. Well, everyone wants to be respected, loved, cared, and supported by others. And so do they. Is it so hard for us to give them all this?-Just a little care and love which would give them a reason to lead a beautiful life ahead...? No...i don't think it is that hard. No one is SO busy that they can't spare an hour or two on the weekends to spend some time with them..!
To bring a smile onto someone's face is the best thing one could ever do! :-) And if something as simple as a smile and a hug from you could do that, then you SHOULD do so! :) the happiness you get by seeing someone smile because of you is priceless!
Try it and you'll love every moment of it! :-)
